Chao Phraya Sky Park – An Elevated Walkway Over the River

The Chao Phraya Sky Park is an elevated garden bridge linking Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon and Thonburi districts. Built on the structure of an abandoned rail line, it connects both banks of the river and offers open views across the city.

From abandoned rail line to sky park

The Chao Phraya Sky Park stands on the framework of a former rail project that never opened.. City planners began the project in the late 20th century to link Bangkok’s two riverbanks, but construction stopped and the structure remained unused for decades. It was later converted into a pedestrian bridge, now especially popular around sunset.

Views and experience

Crossing the bridge, visitors can enjoy wide views of the river and both sides of the city. Looking downstream, the skyline of Bang Rak and Sathon rises behind Chinatown, while upstream the Memorial Bridge frames Wat Arun and Wat Kalayanamit. Plants line the walkway, adding a modest touch of greenery above the river.

Access and nearby attractions

The Sky Park is easy to reach by public transport. Visitors arriving by MRT can alight at Sanam Chai Station and walk toward Memorial Bridge, or reach it by river from Memorial Bridge Pier. The walkway is open daily and free to enter, offering a pleasant pause between nearby sites such as Pak Khlong Talad, Wat Prayun, and Wat Kalayanamit. For general travel information, see the Tourism Authority of Thailand website.

A symbol of reuse and renewal

The Chao Phraya Sky Park illustrates how unused infrastructure can be transformed into public space. Built on an abandoned rail bridge, it offers far-reaching views along the river and an alternative crossing between Bangkok’s historic and modern districts.
