River City – Art, antiques, and riverside culture
River City Bangkok is a riverside centre for art, antiques, and design, combining Thai heritage with modern creativity.
Riverside origins and development
Opened in 1984, River City Bangkok was one of the first developments to combine cultural attractions with riverside retail. Located between the Marine Department and Si Phraya Piers, it has grown into a recognised centre for art and antiques, hosting regional galleries, independent dealers, and exhibitions that present Thai craftsmanship alongside international works.
Exhibitions and artistic experiences
Visitors can explore several floors of art and antiques, from modern Thai painting and sculpture to traditional porcelain and furniture. River City also houses the Artists in Residence programme, where local artists create and display their work on site. In addition, the RCB Auctions hall holds regular art and antiques sales that attract collectors from Thailand and abroad. Talks, screenings, and workshops take place throughout the year, allowing visitors to experience Bangkok’s creative culture in an accessible way.
Access and visitor facilities
River City stands between the Marine Department and Si Phraya Piers, both served by Chao Phraya Express Boats. The site is linked by ferry to ICONSIAM on the opposite bank, while nearby roads connect Chinatown with the Hua Lamphong district. The complex includes cafés and small restaurants, providing a comfortable stop between exhibitions or after exploring nearby Talat Noi. Further details of current and upcoming exhibitions are available on the River City Bangkok website.
Cultural role and continuing appeal
River City continues to support Bangkok’s position as a regional centre for art and heritage. Its blend of old and new reflects the city’s balance between tradition and modern development. For many visitors, it serves as an easy introduction to Thai and Asian art in a riverside setting closely connected to Bangkok’s historical riverfront.
