Sathorn Pier, located beside Saphan Taksin Skytrain station, is one of the few places in Bangkok where passengers can easily transfer between rail and river transport. It serves as the starting point for river cruises and public boats.

From River Trade to Modern Transport Hub

Sathorn Pier occupies a central position within Bangkok’s river network. Historically, this stretch of the Chao Phraya River supported warehouses and trading posts that distributed goods throughout the city. When the BTS Skytrain opened in 1999, the nearby Saphan Taksin station turned the pier into a key interchange between rail and water transport. Today, it remains one of the main embarkation points for tourists and commuters travelling along the river toward the Grand Palace, Wat Arun, and other heritage sites.

Boat Services and Daily Activity

The pier has several jetties, each serving different routes. The left side hosts ticket counters for E-smart boats, hop-on hop-off tourist services, and Chao Phraya Express boats. The latter, identified by orange or yellow flags, stop at most destinations of interest to visitors. Across the canal, another jetty handles cross-river ferries used by local residents. Free shuttle boats run from Sathorn Pier to ICONSIAM across the river and also operate from late afternoon to Asiatique, a riverside shopping and entertainment area.

Getting There and Nearby Attractions

Access to the pier is straightforward. Take the Skytrain to Saphan Taksin station and leave via Exit 2, where stairs lead directly down to the pier building and ticket kiosks. When arriving by boat, turn left and over the canal bridge then take the escalator up to the station platform.
