Kanchanaburi lies around 130 kilometres west of Bangkok and can easily be visited as a day trip. Many visitors join an organised tour, while others choose to travel independently by bus or train. Both options make it possible to see the province’s best-known attractions. Most visits focus on one of two themes. The first explores the area’s Second World War history, including the Bridge over the River Kwai, the Death Railway and Hellfire Pass. The second centres on Erawan Waterfall, one of Thailand’s most popular national parks. If time allows, staying overnight provides a more relaxed experience and makes it easier to combine both. Independent travellers can also visit places that many organised tours omit, while spending longer at the attractions that interest them most.

Second World War Sites and the Death Railway

Kanchanaburi is best known for the Bridge over the River Kwai and the Death Railway, built during the Second World War using Allied prisoners of war and Asian civilian labourers. Today, visitors can explore the war cemetery, museums, the bridge itself and travel part of the original railway. Hellfire Pass, although usually omitted from organised day tours, can also be visited independently.

Erawan Waterfall and the Natural Landscape

Erawan Waterfall is one of Thailand’s most popular national parks, with seven levels of waterfalls and distinctive blue-green pools created by mineral-rich water flowing over limestone. Many visitors swim in the lower pools, while others continue further up the trail to enjoy the forest scenery and quieter surroundings.
